10am – 4pm
Professional musicians Harriet Mackenzie (violin) and Christina Lawrie (piano) are offering a day of tuition for students of any age and ability. The form of the workshops will depend on the number and needs of the participants but part of the day will be spent in demonstration, part on technique and part on interpretation. If you would like to discuss your participation before applying, please telephone 01955 641 270 during July. Participants will be able to attend the recital which Harriet and Christina are giving the following evening.
How it went:

Eleven people – of varying ages and abilities – signed up for the violin and piano workshops run by Harriet Mackenzie (violin) and Christina Lawrie (piano) on 6th August. Most were from Caithness – though one member was on holiday from Australia. We were treated to a full day of music-making, beginning with group singing (nicely breaking the ice and helping us to make new friends) then one-to-one guidance and encouragement, six on violin and five on piano. Apart from enjoying each other’s music, we got so much from Harriet and Christina; their profound talents really inspired – and I’m sure their infectious enthusiasm has left its mark on every one of us. To end the day we each performed a favourite piece in the Arts Centre foyer, an event attended by visitors to the centre: their applause and support rounded off in the best possible way a truly memorable day. And for me, someone who thought he hated performing in public, doing so on this occasion proved I might actually enjoy the experience in future… amazing! Mark Smith
