An evening of Scottish music featuring composer Ronald Stevenson

We welcome a return visit to Lyth by Christopher Guild, a young Scottish pianist, graduate of the Royal College of Music, London and champion of Scottish composer Ronald Stevenson.

Ronald Stevenson is probably the last truly great pianist and composer of his generation. Born in Lancashire in 1928, he settled in Scotland, his paternal homeland, in 1955 and lived there until his death in 2015. He has a reputation as Scotland’s premier composer and the world’s foremost authority on the composer Ferruccio Busoni. His correspondence with the likes of Percy Grainger, Britten, Sibelius and Shostakovich is of inestimable historical importance, and what he has contributed to the public’s awareness of Scottish musical history through his writings and broadcasts is invaluable. Not least, he was a phenomenal pianist.

Stevenson’s music, as well as encompassing large works includes charming miniatures, often incredibly beautiful. These range from original compositions to transcriptions of Scottish folk music and an Irish Mass. Some of these pieces are dedicated to Scottish poets including Hugh MacDiarmid.
