Caithness Big Band
Caithness Big Band loves to play numbers by the great swing bands of the 1930s and 40s – the Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Tommy Dorsey bands. In addition, the band has put its own stamp on a number of standards from that period and from more recent times and during this weekend they will be working on some new material in preparation for a very special forthcoming event! The band has the traditional line-up with saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and rhythm sections plus vocalist. The personnel also changes "as time goes by"…

DAVID PATRICK is now well known at Lyth as he has made frequent visits accompanying singer Todd Gordon and has taken part in previous Jazz Exchanges. He is well-established on the Scottish jazz scene and is known as an inspirational musician and teacher. For this weekend residency and concert he is inviting four other musicians to "cross borders" between Scotland, London and Germany.
From Scotland he is bringing young tenor sax player BRIAN MOLLEY and drummer STUART BROWN who have both been to Lyth before, Brian with Brass Jaw and Stuart with Simon Thacker's Camerata Ritmata.
DAMON BROWN is a trumpet player and composer based in London. He has played at many clubs and festivals in the UK and abroad with his own groups, notably DAMON BROWN QUARTET/QUINTET and KILLER SHRIMP which he co-led with Ed Jones. He has also played as a sideman with Benny Golson, Steve Grossman, Dave Liebman, Doug Raney and many others.
MARTIN ZENKER is a bass player from Munich, Germany with an international career. His academic profile has included posts such as Head of String Division at "Freie Waldorfmusikschule Muenchen", Guest Teacher at the Munich Richard Strauss Konservatorium and, since 2008 he has been Visiting Professor for double bass and jazz history at Kyung Hee Dae, Seoul, Japan. Forty-eight hours after his visit to Lyth he will be back as his desk at Seoul.
Added to which his work as a jazz musician can include up to 300 engagements world-wide per year!
