NYJOS Collective – evening concert

Ten young musicians from the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland arrive for a two night residency and perform some of the work, including newly commissioned pieces, which they have been developing during this year’s summer school under the direction of Malcolm Edmonstone and Andrew Bain.

How did it go?
NYJOS Collective - evening concert

The 13-strong NYJOS party drove up by coach from Aberdeen, arriving with great excitement late-afternoon and, having sorted out their room allocation and enjoying one of Betsy’s marvellous suppers were on stage by 8pm. Malcolm Edmonstone, leading the band described Lyth as “a venue unlike most others where, surprisingly, everything seems to be right!” The audience, largely made up of musicians from the other two bands taking part in the weekend, gave an ecstatically warm reception to the young NYJOS musicians who consequently played with a heightened sense of involvement and the evening soon took off. This felt like the real thing with both musicians and audience sharing their enthusiasm and buzzing off each other with lots of applause for the solos and many smiling faces in the foyer afterwards.
